Call for ideas: 2022 Micro Housing Competition

“HOME” is an intimate space for all living beings on the planet. It has a broader, deeper and personal connection with its user besides being a physical shelter for humans and their daily life, a house forms a distinct and intimate connection with its users. The ultimate goal of a house is to ignite
“the idea of belonging” within its sphere and between all those who share the space.

This gradual increase in population has created an overall housing shortage which can trigger the risk of homelessness and unorganized development such as slums. The ensuing health management risks have a massive impact on personal mindset. To make matters worse, the impact of COVID-19 coupled with environmental and financial concerns has further aggravated the housing crisis.

This phenomenon has given rise to a new Micro-Housing movement; one that commands the idea of a simple yet inventive life in today’s urban scenario. The concept of these revolutionary houses encourages the innovation of maximum functional surface in a minimum footprint, thus redefining the perception of sustainability in urban dwellings.

What is Micro Housing?

A micro-apartment ideally consists of a sleeping area, a common resting area, a kitchenette, a bathroom and storage space designed to camouflage with the space. Space-saving furniture such as beds that can be pushed up into the wall, multifunctional furniture, or extremely small or hidden appliances are key elements that support a micro apartment. There are times when residents may have full access to a full kitchen, living room, housekeeping facilities, and garden.

OPPORTUNITY:

Today, people are concerned and explore opportunities with the aspiration to improve their standard of living and to have more freedom in the field of urban housing.

We invite designers from around the world, from diverse factions, to create inventive and experimental architectural solutions that would surprise today’s housing market and call for a sense of community-based living.

Arranged in autonomous and integrated communities, the residential units would be representative of innovation and creativity in the modularity of spaces. It is through affordable housing that we can bring stability, economic diversity and improve the physical quality of the neighbourhood.

“Housing is absolutely essential to human flourishing. Without a stable shelter, everything crumbles. – Matthew Desmond (American sociologist)
