House On The Hill in Gloucestershire wins big on Grand Designs

A gorgeous Gloucestershire home won first prize from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) in tonight’s episode of Grand Designs: House Of The Year.

The winning “House on the Hill” is located a few miles from Outhouse in the Forest of Dean and in 2016 became the first house in 15 years to be named to the RIBA Sterling Prize finalists list.

RIBA revealed the victory tonight (December 8) tweeted: “ANNOUNCEMENT: House on the Hill, a surprisingly contemporary extension of a Georgian farmhouse in Gloucestershire, designed by @AlisonBrooksArc, has been named @ RIBA’s #HouseoftheYear 2021.”

Hilariously, presenter Kevin McCloud initially likened the design to a jam and peanut butter sandwich.

In a previous episode, TV presenter and style guru Michelle Ogundehin visited the house to speak to the architect who described the West Wing project as a 10-year labor of love.

She told viewers that planners refused permission when they first saw her plans for the traditional stone farmhouse which stands on one of the highest points in Gloucestershire and in an area of exceptional natural beauty.

When asked why she hadn’t added a traditional stone extension to the old farmhouse, architect Alison Brooks said, “I always think when working with a historic building it’s more efficient. to do something that contrasts with it.

“The farm is a large, serious building and the west wing is much more informal.”

“The Grand Finale” is a swimming pool surrounded by perfect, tall drystone walls created by stonemason Matt Barker who describes them as “a really, really expensive wallpaper”.

But Alison says the walls are needed to house the pool as it sits on top of a hill and the wind is blowing from the valley side.
